On March 28, 1947, bus driver William Cimillo pulled out of the Bronx depot of the Surface Transportation Corporation and instead of beginning his daily route as he had done for 16 years, Cimillo drove his bus south to Florida. He attributed his mad dash to “a little spring fever.” In hindsight, we can see the Italian American philosophy of “menefreghismo” at play. Cimillo was heralded as a folk hero upon his return to New York City. Come celebrate the 70th anniversary of William Cimillo’s small act of resistance.
